An introduction to some of the main topics in the Western tradition of the philosophy of art: the nature of artistic representation and expression, emotive responsiveness to art, what marks art as different in kind from other human artifacts, the ethical and political role of some art, etc. These issues traverse the visual arts, architecture, literature, and music. We read both historical and contemporary texts, and there will be in-depth discussion of specific artworks in connection with the readings.
