Courses

Every semester, the Department of Philosophy offers well over one hundred philosophy courses, spanning all major areas of philosophy and its history.

First courses in philosophy are intended to introduce undergraduate students to the discipline of philosophy. Every Notre Dame student is required to take a first course in philosophy. Second courses in philosophy are designed for non-majors who would like to pursue some philosophical question, topic, or period in the history of philosophy in more depth than is possible in a first course in philosophy. All second courses in philosophy satisfy the university philosophy requirement.

We also offer a wide range of courses which are devoted to students pursing a philosophy major or minor, as well as graduate seminars which are normally restricted to PhD students.
