ND Philosophy Welcomes Stephen Ogden

Author: Christine Grandy

OgdenOgden

The Department of Philosophy is excited to welcome Stephen Ogden to the faculty, starting in fall 2021. Stephen specializes in classical Islamic philosophy, and also has interests in medieval philosophy, ancient philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. His book, Averroes on Intellect: From Aristotelian Origins to Aquinas’s Critique is forthcoming with Oxford University Press.

Stephen shared with us: "I am thrilled to join the faculty in Philosophy at Notre Dame! I look forward to collaborating with the extremely strong group of scholars working in medieval philosophy, in particular. But the department's commitment to the value of history of philosophy in general (e.g., in the History of Philosophy Forum) and the department's uniformly keen sense of philosophical inquiry make it an especially attractive home. Ditto for philosophy of religion. I was thankful to have experienced these strengths during a yearlong fellowship at the Medieval Institute (2018–2019), and so I also value the connections I will have to many other people and areas in the university, particularly others working on Islamic thought and history. I know firsthand what a fantastic community of people it is across the university and especially in Philosophy. My kids are also huge fans of the Studebaker Museum and the South Bend Cubs!"

Stephen will be starting Fall semester 2021.
