HPS Colloquium: Daniel Nolan (Phil)

Title: "Beauty and Method"

Are beauty and elegance in scientific theories good guides to successful theories? A number of scientists have claimed that they are, which is one reason among others to think that they play a positive epistemic role. The challenge, then, is to explain why they should guide theory choice. Several options for explaining the theoretical virtue of beauty will be canvassed and criticized.
