Introduction to Philosophy: Philosophy & Mathematics

This course introduces students to philosophy with a special focus on issues at the intersection of philosophy and mathematics and in the philosophy of mathematics. Topics to be discussed may include the role that mathematics has played in the history of philosophy and the role philosophy has played in the history of mathematics, the nature of the infinite, the relationship between mathematics and science, and the role of beauty in mathematics.

This course provides an introduction to philosophy focusing on issues at the intersection of philosophy and mathematics. We’ll start by looking at the role that mathematics has played in (some) philosophers’ conception of the good life. We’ll then discuss the nature of the infinite and the relationship between God and infinity. We’ll end by examining the interplay between mathematics and natural science.
